What if transformation begins not by changing who we are, but by noticing what keeps playing within us?
We all have patterns.
We replay conversations. Anticipate problems. Hold onto resentment. Feel guilty for setting boundaries. React before fully understanding what we’re experiencing.
Some patterns help us navigate life. Others continue playing long after the circumstances that shaped them have changed.
We may recognize these patterns intellectually and still repeat them.
What happens when we become aware of the music without automatically playing along?
This November’s Scorpio New Moon invites us to explore that question through Return To Witness® (RTW), The Human Instrument (THI), and two upcoming experiences at Shakti Creative Wellness Center.
The Scorpio New Moon: What’s Beneath the Surface?
On November 9, 2026, the Sun and Moon meet at approximately 16°53′ Scorpio, beginning a new lunar cycle.
In astrology, Scorpio symbolizes emotional depth, attachment, vulnerability, trust, control, and transformation.
Mercury retrograde in Scorpio adds the symbolism of revisiting familiar stories, assumptions, and unresolved experiences.
Mars and Jupiter together in Leo introduce themes of expression, recognition, confidence, and the desire to act. Their wider sign-based square to Scorpio highlights the contrast between private emotional experience and outward expression.
Together, these placements invite an interesting question:
Are we responding to what’s happening, or reacting to what we believe it means?
A disagreement may feel like rejection.
Someone else’s boundary may feel like criticism.
Uncertainty may create an urgent need for control.
Our bodies can begin responding before we’ve consciously examined the meaning we’re assigning to an experience.
But a reaction doesn’t have to determine our next action.
Return To Witness: A Reaction Is Not a Command
Return To Witness® is an embodied awareness practice that helps us recognize what’s happening within us before automatically responding.
The practice follows four movements:
- Activation: Something happens. A sensation, emotion, thought, or impulse arises.
- Awareness: We witness what’s happening without immediately judging, resisting, or explaining it.
- Agency: We recognize that an impulse is information, not necessarily an instruction.
- Action: We choose what, if anything, happens next.
Imagine feeling resentment when someone asks you to take on another responsibility.
You notice tension in your shoulders, a familiar story about being taken advantage of, and the impulse to say yes anyway.
Instead of immediately agreeing or reacting defensively, you pause.
You experience the tension. Notice the story. Recognize the choice available.
Perhaps you say no. Perhaps you ask for time to consider.
Or perhaps you realize nothing needs to be decided immediately.
A note can be heard without making it a command.
The Human Instrument: Which Voice Is Playing?
The Human Instrument provides a musical framework for understanding our internal experience.
Imagine yourself as a living instrument, with thoughts, emotions, sensations, beliefs, and habitual responses contributing to the music you experience.
THI identifies twelve archetypal Voices representing different aspects of our expression.
The Measure evaluates.
The Conductor organizes and directs.
The Lyricist tells our stories.
The Rhythm reflects our patterns and pacing.
The Harmonizer seeks connection and agreement.
The Improviser explores possibilities.
These Voices are not inherently good or bad. Each contributes something to the whole.
But when one Voice dominates, we may mistake its familiar message for our entire identity.
The Witness, or Musician, allows us to recognize the different Voices without becoming exclusively identified with any one of them.
We can notice the Measure criticizing without accepting every judgment.
Hear the Lyricist repeating an old story without assuming it’s the whole truth.
Recognize the Harmonizer’s desire to please without automatically abandoning our boundaries.
Some notes are played. Some are sung. Some are heard. Some are felt. Not every note requires a response.
What Are You Still Rehearsing?
We rehearse more than we realize.
We mentally repeat conversations that have ended.
Imagine conflicts that haven’t happened.
Practice explanations no one has requested.
Anticipate rejection.
Repeat familiar emotional responses.
Sometimes we’re not responding to the present moment at all. We’re responding to a familiar interpretation of it.
What if we noticed the rehearsal while it was happening?
What if we experienced the sensation beneath the story?
What if we allowed a pause before playing the next note?
The space between notes is not necessarily empty.
It may be where another possibility becomes available.

The Patterns We Repeat: New Moon Tune-Up Sound Session
Our November New Moon gathering offers an opportunity to explore these themes through embodied awareness and sound.
We’ll begin with Return To Witness®, noticing sensations, thoughts, emotions, and familiar responses as they arise.
Through The Human Instrument, we’ll explore simple vocal toning using seed sounds associated symbolically with the musical scale and traditional energy centers.
You’ll then settle into a mostly receptive Tune-Up Sound Session featuring crystal singing bowls, gongs, chimes, and other resonant instruments.
Rather than trying to release something, achieve a particular state, or find an answer, you’re invited to notice your experience as it unfolds.
Where does your attention go?
What do you notice in your body?
What happens when you allow a sound, sensation, or silence without needing to change it?
Participation is always your choice. You may hum, tone, listen, or simply observe. No singing ability, musical training, or previous experience is necessary.
You do not need to know exactly what you need. Start with what you notice.
Continue the Exploration: Community Rehearsals
Notice the Note. Pause Before You Play. Change the Arrangement.
Our upcoming Community Rehearsals take these principles into active, everyday exploration.
Where the New Moon Tune-Up Sound Session emphasizes receptive awareness, Community Rehearsals invite participants to explore how they experience and respond to everyday life.
Through sound, rhythm, gentle movement, somatic awareness, and creative participation, we’ll explore how familiar patterns influence our reactions, relationships, boundaries, and choices.
Each gathering introduces a different aspect of The Human Instrument.
Notice the Note: Recognize what’s happening before automatically responding.
Pause Before You Play: Experience the space between an impulse and an action.
Change the Arrangement: Explore how familiar patterns and internal Voices might participate differently.
These aren’t traditional music lessons, therapy sessions, or lectures about personal development.
They’re opportunities to experience rather than simply understand.
You can participate through movement, sound, reflection, or quiet observation. Sharing personal experiences is always optional.
If you’re new to RTW or THI, you’re welcome. Everything you need to explore the experience will be introduced during the gathering.
A New Moon Practice: Notice What Is Playing
As this lunar cycle begins, consider one familiar pattern.
Perhaps it’s overthinking, people-pleasing, resentment, guilt, self-criticism, or the need to control an outcome.
Rather than trying to eliminate it, explore these questions:
- Pause: What’s happening within me right now?
- Experience: Where do I notice it in my body?
- Listen: What familiar story or Voice accompanies it?
- Allow: Can I experience this without immediately trying to change it?
- Choose: What, if anything, needs to happen next?
You may discover that something changes.
You may discover that it doesn’t.
Either way, you’ve practiced relating to your experience differently.
Your Life Is Not a Performance You Have to Perfect
We spend so much time trying to improve ourselves, control our reactions, and become who we think we’re supposed to be.
What if we began by listening?
The Scorpio New Moon invites us to notice what’s happening beneath the surface.
Return To Witness offers a practice for experiencing it.
The Human Instrument gives us a language for recognizing the Voices and patterns within us.
And Shakti offers opportunities to explore these principles through sound, awareness, and creative participation.
The New Moon invites you to listen. The Rehearsals invite you to participate.
You don’t have to change the entire composition.
Begin with one note.
Notice what is playing. Experience what changes. Choose your next note.
