The World Has It Backwards: Why Your Body Knows What Your Mind Cannot

From the time we are children, we are taught to trust our thoughts more than our bodies.

We are rewarded for being rational, logical, productive, efficient, and mentally sharp. We are taught to think our way through life, analyze our problems, suppress our discomfort, and push through our exhaustion.

We are praised when we override our hunger, ignore our fatigue, suppress our emotions, and keep going despite what our bodies are telling us.

In many ways, modern culture has elevated the mind to a throne and reduced the body to a vehicle that merely carries it around.

Yet what if we have it completely backwards?

What if the body is not the obstacle?

What if the body is the intelligence we’ve been searching for all along?

The First Language

Before we had words, we had sensation.

Before we had beliefs, opinions, philosophies, or identities, we had bodies.

A newborn does not think its way into survival.

It senses.

It feels hunger.

It feels warmth.

It feels danger.

It feels safety.

The body is our first language.

Long before the thinking mind develops, the body is gathering information, adapting, learning, and responding to the world.

The body knows when something feels safe.

The body knows when something feels threatening.

The body knows when it needs rest.

The body knows when it needs movement.

The body knows when something is aligned and when something is not.

The body is constantly communicating.

The problem is that most of us were never taught how to listen.

A Culture of Bypassing

Nearly every system in modern life encourages us to bypass the body’s wisdom.

We are taught to:

  • Ignore fatigue and drink more caffeine.
  • Ignore stress and work harder.
  • Ignore loneliness and scroll longer.
  • Ignore grief and stay busy.
  • Ignore anxiety and distract ourselves.
  • Ignore discomfort and push through.

We learn to live from the neck up.

The result is a strange kind of disconnection.

People know how to explain their feelings but cannot sense them.

They know how to analyze their lives but cannot inhabit them.

They know how to discuss their stress but cannot feel where it lives in their body.

Many people can tell you exactly what they think.

Far fewer can tell you what they feel.

Even fewer can tell you where they feel it.

We have become highly educated in thought and remarkably undereducated in sensation.

The Intelligence Beneath Thought

The body is not simply flesh, muscle, and bone.

It is an extraordinary information-processing system.

Your heart responds before conscious awareness.

Your nervous system detects subtle changes before your mind identifies them.

Your gut receives and processes enormous amounts of information.

Your breathing patterns reveal shifts in your internal state long before you consciously recognize them.

Much of what we call intuition may simply be the body’s ability to recognize patterns faster than conscious thought.

The body notices before the mind explains.

Yet instead of listening, we often argue with it.

We tell ourselves we shouldn’t feel tired.

We shouldn’t feel sad.

We shouldn’t feel nervous.

We shouldn’t feel afraid.

But the body is not asking for permission.

It is offering information.

What Makes Us Human

Ironically, many people spend their lives trying to transcend the very thing that makes them human.

The goal becomes escaping discomfort, conquering emotion, suppressing sensation, or rising above the body altogether.

But being human is not a problem to solve.

It is an experience to inhabit.

The body allows us to feel joy.

The body allows us to feel wonder.

The body allows us to experience love, connection, creativity, awe, and belonging.

Every meaningful moment of life is experienced through the body.

The warmth of a hug.

The sound of laughter.

The feeling of sunlight on your skin.

The sensation of tears when something moves you deeply.

The body is not separate from life.

The body is how life is experienced.

Returning Home

The invitation is not to abandon the mind.

The mind is a remarkable tool.

But it was never meant to lead alone.

The mind helps us interpret reality.

The body helps us experience reality.

When the two work together, wisdom emerges.

The body provides information.

The mind provides meaning.

The body senses.

The mind organizes.

The body feels.

The mind understands.

One without the other creates imbalance.

Together they create wholeness.

A Different Question

Instead of asking:

“What should I think?”

We might begin asking:

“What am I noticing in my body right now?”

Instead of asking:

“How do I make this feeling go away?”

We might ask:

“What is this feeling trying to show me?”

Instead of overriding sensation, we can become curious about it.

Instead of escaping discomfort, we can learn from it.

Instead of treating the body as a machine to control, we can begin relating to it as a source of intelligence.

The Way Forward

Perhaps the greatest revolution available to us is not learning something new.

It is remembering something ancient.

Remembering that our bodies have been speaking all along.

Remembering that sensation is not the enemy.

Remembering that awareness begins with what is actually happening inside us.

The world may continue to tell us to think harder, work harder, push harder, and disconnect from ourselves.

But another path is available.

A path of listening.

A path of sensing.

A path of honoring the intelligence that has been with us since our first breath.

Because the body is not something we have.

The body is where we live.

And when we learn to listen to it, we begin to remember what it means to be fully human.

If this article resonated with you, then check out the upcoming Patterns To Presence Workshop at Shakti featuring the Return To Witness Practice. You will learn that the first step, Activation, begins not with thoughts, stories, or analysis, but with sensation.

Your body becomes the doorway back to Awareness, Agency, and ultimately Action and finally Sovereignty. And the body is not the problem to solve. It is the place where experience becomes visible.
